A Chukka Boot Built for Everyday Distinction

The Barker Rosedale in black is a chukka boot in through-dyed calfskin, Goodyear welted and fitted with a 10mm Dainite rubber outsole. It wears like a classic ankle lace-up but is robust enough for daily use – from the office to a weekend in the city.

History: From the Polo Field to the City Wardrobe

Around 1900, British polo players in India wore a short lace-up boot with two or three eyelets – functional, quick to pull on, stable enough for sport. The style of the chukka boot – named after a period of play in polo – travelled back to Britain with returning officers. Edward VIII adopted it publicly in 1924, and the short-shafted Derby lace-up became fashionable. Over the 20th century it became a favourite among businessmen and discerning dressers alike.

A famous offshoot: Nathan Clark developed the Desert Boot in 1947, inspired by shoes British soldiers bought in North Africa during the Second World War – featuring a crepe sole and a slightly more casual character. Steve McQueen wore it in the 1950s, cementing its status as a style icon. The Barker Rosedale belongs to the classic chukka tradition: Dainite rubber sole rather than crepe, cork filling and welt stitching rather than a glued sole – built for all days, not just the casual ones.

Goodyear Welted Construction with Cork Filling

The Rosedale is made using the Goodyear welted method: upper, insole, a continuous leather welt and the outsole are joined by a double row of stitching. Between the insole and the outsole lies a layer of natural cork that gradually moulds to the foot, forming a personalised footbed. The decisive advantage: the shoe can be resoled multiple times. With good care and timely resoling, it will serve for decades.

Dainite Rubber Sole: The British Benchmark

The outsole is 10mm Dainite – the premium rubber sole from Yorkshire, used by the finest cordwainers in Northamptonshire for decades. Dainite is weather-resistant, slip-resistant on wet surfaces, and grippy enough for cobblestones and office floors alike. The distinctive studs provide traction without making the shoe look heavy. The heel is composed of stacked leather with a Dainite rubber top-piece.

Through-Dyed Calfskin

The upper of the Rosedale is through-dyed calfskin: the colour runs through the entire thickness of the leather, not just the surface. Minor scuffs and abrasions are barely visible because the interior of the leather carries the same colour. Calfskin is finely grained, firm, and takes shoe cream exceptionally well.

Care

Remove dust and dirt with a soft brush. Work in a wax- or water-based cream – for black, Saphir Crème Surfine or Burgol shoe cream in black are excellent choices. Once absorbed, buff to a shine with a brush or polishing cloth. Between wearing days, rest on cedar shoe trees: the wood absorbs moisture, holds the shape, and prevents crease lines from setting. The Dainite sole needs no special care but should be replaced promptly when significantly worn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a chukka boot and a desert boot?
The desert boot is a specific variant of the chukka boot: Nathan Clark developed it in 1947 with a crepe sole and a slightly more casual character. The chukka boot as a category covers all short ankle lace-ups with two or three eyelets – including styles with rubber or leather soles, such as the Rosedale.

Is the Barker Rosedale suitable for business wear?
Yes, within a business casual context. It pairs well with well-cut suits, chinos, and dark trousers. For formal business dress codes, Oxford or Derby plain-toe lace-ups without an ankle shaft are the better choice.

Can the Rosedale be resoled?
Yes. The Goodyear welted construction allows the Dainite sole to be replaced by a cobbler without damaging the upper. With regular care and timely resoling, the shoe will last decades.

How does the fit run?
The Rosedale is on last 464, width F (standard). If you normally wear width F, you should be well served. For width G wearers, we recommend sizing up or choosing a width G model.

What size should I order?
Barker uses UK shoe sizing. UK 8 corresponds to approximately EU 42. If in doubt, measure your foot length in centimetres and compare with our size guide.
