Full Brogue Longwing in Chestnut – Character That Deepens with Every Wear

The Barker Pickering in chestnut is a Full Brogue Longwing Derby in through-dyed calfskin, with a 360° storm welt and a 10mm Dainite rubber outsole. The warm, slightly red-brown tone of the chestnut leather meets the bold silhouette of the longwing brogue – a shoe that shows more personality than plain black, and only grows in expressiveness with age.

The Story of the Brogue

The brogue originated in 16th-century Scotland and Ireland as a working shoe for farmers and labourers in wet bogland. The perforations served a practical purpose: water entering the shoe when wading through marshes could drain back out. Over the 19th century, the working shoe became the sporting and hunting shoe of the British landed gentry – and from there the brogue made its way into city wardrobes and offices.

The Full Brogue – a wingtip with a row of perforations along the entire W-shaped cap and a medallion on the toe – is traditionally the most expressive brogue variant. In the Longwing, the wingtip line runs completely around the shoe to the back heel seam. The silhouette is bolder, the statement clearer. In chestnut, this ornamentation gains an additional dimension: the warm brown makes every perforation row stand out in three-dimensional relief.

Chestnut: A Colour That Lives

"Chestnut" describes the warm, slightly red-brown tone of a horse chestnut seed – a shade that is particularly alive in calfskin. Through-dyed chestnut leather develops an increasingly deep, amber-toned patina with regular care. Every wear pattern, fold, and minor abrasion leaves a trace – the shoe becomes a personal object over the years. This is what sets quality through-dyed calf shoes apart from fashion shoes with a surface-applied colour coat. In chestnut, the Pickering pairs equally well with navy, grey, khaki, olive, and brown – one of the most versatile colour combinations in men's footwear.

360° Storm Welt: The Reinforced Frame Construction

The Pickering is made using the Goodyear welted method and is additionally fitted with a 360° storm welt. In a storm welt construction, the continuous leather welt around the shoe is overlaid on its outer edge by an additional leather strip – closing the seam between the upper and the outsole and forming a continuous barrier against moisture. The result: better weather resistance than a standard Goodyear welt, a bolder visual profile line, and greater structural stability. Natural cork filling moulds to the foot over time.

Dainite Rubber Sole: The British Benchmark

The outsole is 10mm Dainite – the premium rubber sole from Yorkshire, used by the finest cordwainers in Northamptonshire for decades. Dainite is weather-resistant, slip-resistant on wet surfaces, and grippy on cobblestones and office floors alike. The heel is composed of stacked leather with a Dainite rubber top-piece.

Care

Remove dust and dirt with a soft brush – for brogues, pay attention to the rows of perforations. For chestnut, use a shoe cream in cognac, mid-brown, or natural: Saphir Crème Surfine in cognac or Burgol shoe cream in mid-brown work well. Work in the cream, allow to absorb, then buff to a shine with a brush or polishing cloth. For a deeper tone over time, finish with a brown wax polish. Between wearing days, rest on cedar shoe trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Full Brogue and a Longwing?
In a standard Full Brogue, the W-shaped wingtip line ends at the heel. In a Longwing, it runs all the way around the shoe to the back heel seam – the most expressive brogue variant.

What is a storm welt?
An additional leather strip covers the outer seam of the Goodyear welt, sealing the join between upper and sole against moisture. This makes the Pickering more weather-resistant than a shoe with a standard Goodyear welt.

What colours does chestnut pair with?
Chestnut is one of the most versatile shoe colours: navy, grey, khaki, olive, and dark brown all pair equally well, as do natural and warm earth tones. The Pickering in chestnut works with suits, chinos, and well-cut trousers alike.

Can the Pickering be resoled?
Yes. The Goodyear storm welt construction allows the Dainite sole to be replaced by a cobbler without damaging the upper. With regular care and timely resoling, the shoe will last decades.

What size should I order?
Barker uses UK shoe sizing. UK 8 corresponds to approximately EU 42. If in doubt, measure your foot length in centimetres and compare with our size guide.
