Leather Stretching Spray 100 ml – Soften Leather, Stretch Shoes Permanently
The Langer & Messmer leather stretching spray in the 100 ml bottle is what makes shoe stretchers work properly. Dry leather stretches under pressure but springs back when released. This spray temporarily softens the leather fibres so they permanently hold the new shape under stretcher pressure. The result is a lasting stretch, not a temporary one.
How the Spray Works
Leather consists of interwoven protein fibres. In their normal state these fibres are relatively rigid and resist reshaping. The spray contains active ingredients that make these fibres temporarily softer and more pliable. While the leather is in this softened state under stretcher pressure, the fibres adopt the new shape. As the leather cools and dries, the fibres set in the new position. The result is a permanent stretch at exactly the point where pressure was applied.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Test for material compatibility on a hidden area (heel or inner tongue).
- Identify the pressure point on the shoe.
- Apply 2 to 3 sprays to the outside of the shoe at the pressure point.
- Apply 2 to 3 sprays to the inside of the shoe at the same point.
- Allow approximately 5 minutes to absorb until the leather is slightly damp but not saturated.
- Insert shoe stretcher or hallux valgus tool and build pressure.
- Leave in position for 4 to 8 hours or overnight.
- Remove stretcher and try on the shoe. Repeat if needed.
Suitable Materials
Suitable for: smooth leather (through-dyed and grain), suede (nubuck and velour), and synthetic uppers. Not suitable for patent leather. For suede, refresh with a suede protector spray after stretching. On synthetic materials the effect is reduced compared to genuine leather; multiple applications may be needed.
Multiple Applications Improve Results
As indicated on the product label: more effective with repeated application. If one treatment is not sufficient, the process can be repeated after the leather has fully dried. Wait at least 12 hours between treatments to allow the leather to dry completely and the fibres to set.
Combination with Shoe Stretcher and Hallux Valgus Tool
The spray achieves its full effect only in combination with a mechanical stretcher. For full-width shoe stretching: Langer & Messmer shoe stretcher. For targeted pressure points at bunions, ball-of-foot, or corns: Langer & Messmer hallux valgus stretcher. The spray is also included with the hallux valgus stretcher in a 50 ml version. This 100 ml version is for multiple pairs or frequent use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the spray without a shoe stretcher?
With limitations. The spray softens the leather but does not mechanically stretch it. For a lasting shape change, a mechanical tool is always needed. However, the spray alone can help with breaking in new shoes when the shoes are worn immediately after application.
Does the spray change the leather colour?
Not with correct dosage. Too much spray can make leather appear temporarily darker until it dries. After drying, the colour returns. On light or natural-coloured leather, always test on a hidden area before the main application.
How long does the spray's effect last?
The spray is active only during the application phase while the leather is still damp. The resulting stretch is then permanent. The spray itself has no long-term effect on the leather – it is a stretching aid, not a leather care product.
Can I spray the entire shoe interior to help break in new shoes?
Yes. For new tight shoes, spray the full interior, then put the shoes on immediately and wear for 20 to 30 minutes. The leather moulds to the foot shape.
