Why merino wool is the best choice for men's socks
Merino wool differs fundamentally from conventional wool. The fibre of the merino sheep measures just 16 to 24.5 microns in diameter. The human itch threshold is around 25 microns. This means merino fibres are simply too fine to trigger the scratching sensation commonly associated with wool socks. The result is a wearing comfort that feels closer to cotton, but with considerably better performance properties.
Temperature regulation: cool in summer, warm in winter
The naturally crimped merino fibres create small air pockets between the threads. Air conducts heat poorly. In cold conditions, these pockets hold body warmth close to the foot. In warm conditions, the fibre actively wicks moisture outward, producing a cooling effect. Men's merino wool socks are therefore not a seasonal product. They are comfortable year-round, including in the office on warm days.
100% merino or a blend: which is better?
Many lower-priced merino products use blended fabrics containing 20 to 40% synthetic fibres to reduce cost. The advantage of pure merino wool becomes clear in odour management: merino fibres bind perspiration odour within the fibre and only release it during washing. Synthetic fibres do the opposite. What are the disadvantages of merino wool?
Merino wool is more sensitive to friction than synthetic fibres and should not be washed at high temperatures. Both concerns are addressed in these socks: the reinforced toe and heel areas protect the highest-abrasion zones, and the socks do not shrink when care instructions are followed.
Construction and fit
The socks are calf-length with a smooth knit. The toe and heel areas are reinforced to provide greater durability where abrasion is highest. Size note: these socks run slightly large. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one.
