Cotton Shoe Polishing Glove for Smooth Leather

The polishing glove slips over your hand and does two jobs: it applies shoe polish thinly and evenly, then buffs the leather to a shine. Because your fingers are almost in direct contact with the shoe, you work more precisely than with a brush, right into the seams, edges and broguing. The soft cotton sits on the upper without any hard edges.

When the glove is the better tool

On smooth, single-colour surfaces a polishing brush is fast and powerful. The moment the shoe gets busier, the brush loses precision. On woven shoes, on two-tone spectators and on shoes that mix leather and fabric, you guide the glove along the colour line without straying onto the neighbouring area. The second advantage shows when several pairs are lined up: the glove takes noticeably less effort than a brush.

What the glove will not do

For the final high shine the brush stays the stronger tool, ideally with a nylon stocking over it. It generates more friction heat, the waxes fuse more densely and the mirror gloss comes out higher. The glove sits one step below that. When you are building a high shine, use the glove to apply and pre-buff, and finish with the brush. For especially delicate uppers and patent leather, our genuine lambskin polishing glove is the finer option.

One glove per colour

Cotton takes up pigment and releases it again. A glove you have used with dark brown polish has no business on a cognac shoe. In practice you therefore keep one glove each for light, medium and dark shades. That is exactly why the glove is also offered as a set of three.

How to use it

  1. Remove dust and dirt dry, and insert a shoe tree so the leather sits taut.
  2. Pull on the glove and pick up a little polish with your fingertips.
  3. Spread the polish thinly in small circular motions, seams and edges first.
  4. Let the polish absorb for a few minutes.
  5. Buff with a clean part of the glove in long, even strokes.
  6. Store the gloves separated by colour group.

Frequently asked questions

Do you apply shoe polish with a brush or cloth?
Either works, and the glove combines both jobs. Apply the polish thinly with the glove or a small brush, let it absorb, then buff. The glove gives you more control on seams and two-tone shoes; a brush builds a higher final shine.

What is the best way to polish shoes?
Work sparingly and give the leather time. A little polish, spread thin, left to absorb, then buffed in long even strokes. Two thin passes beat one thick coat. Keep a separate glove for each colour family.

How long do you leave shoe polish on before buffing?
A few minutes for a normal cream polish, so it can absorb. Hard wax for a mirror shine can sit longer. Then buff off the surplus and bring up the gloss.
