Hog bristle or horsehair
For rugged leather that has been treated with dubbin, firm hog bristles are the right choice. They are stiffer than horsehair and reliably lift the thick, excess grease that a soft brush would only smear. Because they are natural bristles, they stay gentle and will not scratch even hard-worn leather. For smooth dress shoes and a fine shine, use our horsehair polishing and dusting brush instead: horsehair is softer, spreads shoe cream finely and buffs calf leather to a high shine.
Polishing and dusting
The brush does two jobs. After care, it brings up the shine with brisk strokes and lifts off the excess grease as it goes. Between wears, it takes dust and loose dirt off the surface dry, so nothing builds up. The leather stays even and ready to wear.
How to use it
- Clear the shoe of coarse dirt first and apply the dubbin as usual.
- Let the grease soak in for several hours or overnight.
- Then polish over the leather in brisk strokes until the surface is even and dry to the touch.
- Lift off the excess grease as you go. To dust, brush over the shoe dry between wears.
- If the brush clogs with grease, wash it out in warm soapy water and let it dry bristles-down.
