The comfort comes from the fibre. Merino wool measures between 16 and 24.5 microns, well below the human itch threshold of around 25 microns. Unlike coarser wools, merino sits directly against skin without causing irritation. The crimped fibre structure creates tiny air pockets that trap body heat in the cold and allow heat to escape in the warm, acting as a natural thermostat. Merino also absorbs up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet and releases it gradually, keeping your feet dry throughout the day.
These calf-length socks work as well under dress trousers as under chinos. The smooth, fine knit lies flat and invisible beneath suit trousers. The reinforced toe and heel area extends the sock's lifespan through daily use. For business travel they are particularly practical: the natural odour resistance means they can be worn for two or more days before washing.
On the question of disadvantages: merino wool requires slightly more care than synthetic socks. A mesh laundry bag and a gentle 30 degrees C cycle are enough to keep them in shape for years. Given the natural temperature regulation, odour resistance, and long-term durability, the extra care is a worthwhile trade.
