The Story of the Brogue
The brogue originated in 16th-century Scotland and Ireland as a working shoe for farmers and labourers in wet bogland. The characteristic perforations served a practical purpose: water that entered the shoe when wading through marshes could drain back out through them. Over the 19th century, the working shoe became the sporting and hunting shoe of the British landed gentry – and from there the brogue made its way into city wardrobes and offices.
The Full Brogue – a wingtip with a row of perforations along the entire W-shaped cap and a medallion on the toe – is traditionally the most expressive brogue variant.
