Full Brogue Longwing with Storm Welt – British Style Without Compromise

The Barker Pickering in black is a Full Brogue Longwing Derby in through-dyed calfskin, with a 360° storm welt and a 10mm Dainite rubber outsole. It carries the distinctive perforation of the brogue across the full length of the shoe – a gesture of craft strength that also tells a story.

The Story of the Brogue

The brogue originated in 16th-century Scotland and Ireland as a working shoe for farmers and labourers in wet bogland. The characteristic perforations served a practical purpose: water that entered the shoe when wading through marshes could drain back out through them. Over the 19th century, the working shoe became the sporting and hunting shoe of the British landed gentry – and from there the brogue made its way into city wardrobes and offices.

The Full Brogue – a wingtip with a row of perforations along the entire W-shaped cap and a medallion on the toe – is traditionally the most expressive brogue variant. In the Longwing (also called the American Brogue), the wingtip line goes a step further: it runs completely around the shoe to the back heel seam. The silhouette is bolder, the statement clearer. The Pickering is in this sense a shoe with genuine character – not despite its ornamentation, but because of it.

360° Storm Welt: The Reinforced Frame Construction

The Pickering is made using the Goodyear welted method and is additionally fitted with a 360° storm welt. In a storm welt construction, the continuous leather welt around the shoe is overlaid on its outer edge by an additional leather strip – this closes the seam between the upper and the outsole and forms a continuous barrier against moisture. The result: better weather resistance than a standard Goodyear welt, a bolder visual profile line, and greater structural stability. Natural cork filling between the insole and outsole moulds to the foot over time.

Dainite Rubber Sole: The British Benchmark

The outsole is 10mm Dainite – the premium rubber sole from Yorkshire, used by the finest cordwainers in Northamptonshire for decades. Dainite is weather-resistant, slip-resistant on wet surfaces, and grippy on cobblestones and office floors alike. The distinctive studs provide traction without making the shoe look heavy. The heel is composed of stacked leather with a Dainite rubber top-piece.

Through-Dyed Calfskin

The upper of the Pickering is through-dyed calfskin: the colour runs through the entire thickness of the leather, not just the surface. Calfskin is finely grained, firm, and takes shoe cream exceptionally well. In black, the brogue perforations read with particular clarity against the smooth, high-contrast surface.

Care

Remove dust and dirt with a soft brush – pay particular attention to the rows of perforations, working the bristles into them to clear accumulated dirt. Work in a black shoe cream (Saphir Crème Surfine in black or Burgol shoe cream in black work well), allow to absorb, then buff to a shine with a brush or polishing cloth. Between wearing days, rest on cedar shoe trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Full Brogue and a Longwing?
In a standard Full Brogue, the W-shaped wingtip line ends at the heel. In a Longwing, it runs all the way around the shoe to the back heel seam. The result is a more pronounced silhouette – the Longwing is considered the most expressive brogue variant.

What is a storm welt?
A storm welt is a reinforcement of the Goodyear frame: an additional leather strip covers the outer seam of the welt, sealing the join between upper and sole against moisture. This makes the Pickering more weather-resistant than a shoe with a standard Goodyear welt.

Is the Barker Pickering a business shoe?
Yes, within a business casual context. The Full Brogue is traditionally the most relaxed of the brogue variants – it pairs well with suits in navy, grey, and brown as well as chinos and well-cut trousers. For strict formal dress codes, a plain-toe Oxford or Derby is the better choice.

Can the Pickering be resoled?
Yes. The Goodyear storm welt construction allows the Dainite sole to be replaced by a cobbler without damaging the upper. With regular care and timely resoling, the shoe will last decades.

What size should I order?
Barker uses UK shoe sizing. UK 8 corresponds to approximately EU 42. If in doubt, measure your foot length in centimetres and compare with our size guide.
