Cedar Shoe Trees – Maintain Shape, Absorb Moisture, Protect Leather
The Langer & Messmer cedar shoe trees in untreated Western Red Cedar are the essential tool of proper shoe care. They maintain shoe shape after wearing, absorb the moisture the foot produces during the day, and keep the shoe smelling fresh with the natural cedar scent. A shoe stored without a tree loses its shape within a few years. A shoe stored on trees lasts a lifetime.
Why Use Shoe Trees at All?
During wear, leather shoes absorb moisture. An adult produces up to half a litre of perspiration per day through their feet. This moisture stretches the leather during wear and stiffens it as it cools, forming creases across the vamp. Without shoe trees, the leather dries in the creased position. Trees correct this after every wearing: they hold the leather in its stretched original shape throughout the drying phase.
Why Cedar – and Why Untreated?
Cedar from Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) has been the preferred material for shoe trees for centuries. Not for appearance, but for chemistry: the wood contains natural essential oils that absorb moisture, emit a pleasant scent, and inhibit bacterial growth. These oils are volatile – once the wood is lacquered, oiled, or otherwise treated, the pores are sealed and the oils can no longer work. Our shoe trees are made from untreated Western Red Cedar for exactly this reason: maximum function, no compromise for appearance.
Double Spring and Split Toe Piece
A shoe tree that only springs in one dimension fits by accident. Our trees have a double spring in the length and a single spring in the front section. This combination means the tree actively takes up the shoe length without pressing against the last. The split front piece is adjustable by screw for width: narrow shoe, wide shoe, pointed last, round toe. The tree adapts to the shoe, not the other way around.
Ergonomic Grip with Brass Knob
The heel section has an ergonomic handle and a brass knob for removal. Shoe trees that are difficult to insert or remove simply don't get used. The handle is dimensioned for one-handed operation even in narrow shoes, without reaching into the shoe lining.
Includes Cedar Travel Shoe Horn
Each pair of shoe trees comes with a cedar travel shoe horn, made from excess wood in the production process. No material waste, a useful accessory.
How to Use
Insert shoe trees immediately after removing shoes. Remove laces from the shoe interior first. Push the front section as far into the shoe as possible, then press the heel section down until the tree sits firmly. The gap between the two wooden sections should be approximately 1 to 2 cm. Adjust width using the screw on the front piece if needed. To remove, slide the heel section slightly forward and lift out. Leave shoe trees in for at least 24 hours after wearing – ideally at all times when the shoe is not being worn.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should shoe trees stay in?
At least 24 hours after each wearing. Ideally: permanently, meaning whenever the shoe is not being worn. This is not an exaggeration. Most damage to leather shoes occurs during storage without trees, not during wear.
Do cedar shoe trees work in trainers?
With limitations. For leather-lined trainers or those with a wide toe box, they often fit well. For very narrow athletic shoes or those with a firm structured toe, the tree may not fully reach the front section. For quality leather trainers, the investment is worthwhile.
Can I use these for women's shoes?
Yes. Sizes 34/35 through 40/41 are designed for women's shoe sizes. The product is designed as unisex – the shoe tree is functionally gender-neutral.
Do the shoe trees need maintenance?
No – this is the principle of untreated wood. Do not oil, varnish, or wet them. If the scent fades after several years, the surface can be lightly sanded with fine sandpaper to open the pores and release fresh aroma.
How many pairs of shoe trees do I need?
One pair per pair of shoes. The trees should stay in permanently. If you own four pairs of leather shoes, you need four pairs of shoe trees.
