The chukka boot originated in India around 1900, where British polo players were looking for comfortable yet sturdy footwear for the “chukka” – a period of play in polo. Ankle-high, with two or three eyelets, it offered just the right balance of support and lightness.In 1924, Edward VIII – then still the Duke of Windsor – brought the style to Great Britain and made it socially acceptable in the West.During the Second World War, a more robust version was developed in North Africa: inspired by the South African veldskoen, suede models with soft crepe soles were created. Nathan Clark took up this idea and launched it on the market as the ‘desert boot’ – more casual, suitable for everyday wear, iconic. The classic chukka remains more elegant, often with a leather or rubber sole, while the desert boot embodies a softer, more informal style.Today, the chukka is considered the epitome of smart casual style – timeless, versatile and, not least, made legendary by style icons such as Steve McQueen.
