BARKER JeThe penny loafer has its roots in Norwegian fishing villages, more specifically in the Aurland shoe – a sturdy moccasin designed for everyday wear and work. In the 1930s, G.H. Bass brought this idea to the United States and made it popular under the name ‘Weejun’ – a reference to ‘Norwegians’.In the 1950s, students at American Ivy League universities discovered the shoe for themselves. They stuck a penny in the slot of the leather strap – partly as pocket money for pay phones, partly as a fashion statement. This is how the loafer got its name, which is still used today.
It became an integral part of the preppy style, worn with chinos, polo shirts and with a new casualness – often even without socks. In the 1950s and 1960s, it became a symbol of an entire generation caught between tradition and change.
