The monk strap – from monastery to icon
In the 15th century, in the harsh regions of Europe, monks sought a more robust replacement for their sandals. This led to the creation of a closed leather shoe with a distinctive buckle – durable, functional and designed for hard work in monasteries and on uneven terrain. Instead of laces, the buckle now characterised the shoe's appearance – a detail that still gives the shoe its unmistakable silhouette today. The original single monk strap gave rise to the elegant double monk strap version with two buckles – more support, more presence, more character.Over the centuries, the monk strap found its way out of the monastery walls and into the world of gentlemanly style. Today, it stands confidently between the loafer and the Oxford – versatile, stylish and sophisticated in business as well as on formal occasions.

Double monk strap with silver-coloured buckles – a classic in the classic gentleman's wardrobe. The fashionable version has two buckles – these are either arranged parallel or slightly spread apart.
